Veterinarians

Selecting a veterinarian can be difficult. Many veterinarians only treat popular pets, such as dogs, cats, and birds. They refer to hedgehogs as "exotics" and give them only cursory treatment. Many veterinarians may have never handled a hedgehog and are left providing treatment as though it is a very small cat.

When choosing a veterinarian, ask if the veterinarian specializes in exotics. Specifically state that you have a hedgehog. Ask what a standard procedure includes. Will the hedgehog be given an X-ray regularly to watch for early signs of cancer? Does the veterinarian have treatment plans for Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome? The questions you ask before selecting a veterinarian are free. Once you make an appointment, you will probably have to pay to get answers.

Finding a Veterinarian

If you know others who have hedgehogs, ask them who they suggest. Hedgehog owners are the best source of information about veterinarians. It may seem odd, but another good source of information is your local veterinarian community. Call your local veterinarians and ask them who they would refer to treat a hedgehog. There is a good chance you have an "exotic pet" expert in you area.
